Fishing trip Cabo Verde May 2016
Rick Zeedijk and I left to Lisbon on Thursday 12th May, where we stayed one night. The next day we flew to Sao Vicente to start our 6 days fishing for Blue Marlin.
Initially the first day, we planned to go fishing with Randy Das on Cal Rai, was on Sunday but after talking to him we decided to reschedule to Saturday. The waters around São Vicente were green, so we decided to go further towards Santo Antao. It took us three hours to sail to the good spots, which left us with only five hours for fishing. With the catch of 2 blue marlins we can say we had a good start of our fishing trip: 2/2.
Sunday we were free and on Monday we had a seven hours trip to get to Sao Nicolau with the Nha Cretcheu and captain Stuart Simpson. We agreed to fish there for 5 days. It turned out to be fantastic fishing days with 4 and 3 marlins on the last two days. Catch with Stuart in 5 days: 12/19.
In total we caught 14 marlins and a wahoo. Wednesday the 18th of May, I caught my 100th billfish and with 8 marlin in 6 days it became my most successful Big game trip ever.
Many thanks to Didier Jeanne from family hotel Alto Fortim and captains Randy Das and Stuart Simpson and their crew Daddy Das, Steven and Jacko.
I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Cabo Verde. This is planned for the 2nd week of May 2017. The Penn Challenge tournament will be organized from Mindelo on Sao Vicente as part of the open Dutch EFSA Big gameChampionships. If you are interested to join these Championships, please contact me as soon as possible, phone nr: 0031633150610 or send an email to fransvanoss@upcmail.nl.

Dominique and Michel regular curtomers, with the Bertram and Stuart Simpson as skipper.
First day in Sao Pedro, 2 blue marlin caught (800 lbs and 600 lbs)
The second day, they changed to fish in Santo Antao (green water in Sao Pedro): 1 marlin caught

The fourth day: 1 marlin caught.
The fifth day: 2 blue marlin caught
The sixth day: nothing, only tracking a fish and back to Mindelo
The seventh day: back in Sao Pedro, nothing, it was strange because there were many birds, many dolphins, many detections in sonar, but nothing.
Anyway Dominique and Michel were satisfied with 8 fishes. They will come back next year.

The second day, two marlins caught
On the third day, nothing, no contact

On the fifth day, Santo Antao again, we caught 2 marlins.
With so many fishes, the Leparq leave Cape Verde happy, they will come back next year.
Dimeu just finished a 4 day trip fishing with Fred and Mitchell from Belgium fishing off of San Pedro bank.
The first day started out great with a wahoo caught in the shallows of the banks. Taking full advantage of the fantastic 15 knot flat calm sea, we decide to head out to draper water. We saw a blue marlin tailing on the surface and began fishing with 2 skip baits and a Pakula lure down the center. Our first bite came and we had a 250lb blue marlin, and a 130lb caught on the center line. 15 minutes later, we came on a 300 lb blue marlin that ate the pitch lure. We went inshore as wind picked up and in the afternoon we headed back off shore where we found another blue around 500 lb that came in on our skipping tuna.
The next day the wind picked up a bit so we fished closer to shore having a quiet morning, we found our blues off the Big Rock again, catching a nice 400lb blue on the 50lb pitch bait soon followed by a healthy 350lb caught on the short rigger.
The next day, sea became a bit rougher with the wind increasing and the swells, we went back to the bank and caught a 500lb blue on the Center line. An amazing four days tip with being lucky enough to catch Mitchell's dream fish, not just once but 4 times!!!!
Dimeu back in after a 3 day charter with some fantastic gentlemen from Sweden.
Unfortunately our first day had a fair bit of swell so we fished in shore finding at the end of the day 2 blues off of the airport. Both fished came to the teasers but the first around 200lb wouldn't switch, we did a few passes trying to raise her again and came across another around 350 lb that faded off our teasers and PILLED on our center rigger; unfortunately it spit the hooks.
Our second day had bigger swell and big winds so fishing was very slow for us. But we made up for it on our last day with flat calm seas and hardly any winds. We decided to head east thru shallow water where we caught a wahoo followed shortly by seeing a blue marlin on the surface smashing a flying fish. We took a few turns around and this aggressive little marlin around 200 lb came flying into our spread smashing our teasers. We pitched a bait to him but he was only interested in using his hooter and not into eating, we headed east again with the advantage of amazing weather and worked the edge of the drop off on the east side. We raised two marlin: the largest around 500lbs that again came in on the teaser, we pitched a bait and she destroyed it at the same time the smaller blue around 300 came in and took our long rigger. Another amazing time with our clients on Dimeu!
Theo Daly and Rudolf Muller, with Bertram Stuart Simpson, 6 days in Santo Antao: 22 blue marlin seen for 10 caught to Pitch bait, satisfied customers, they have already booked for next year.
5 days of fishing with Jean François Brisson.
Day 1: São Nicolau, no fish
Day 2: we leave São Nicolau, the water is green, but very quiet, we catch one marlin on the eastern side of Sao Vicente in pitch (250 lbs).
Day 3: São Pedro, we take 2 marlins (550 lbs and 260 lbs) for 4 contacts and 2 seen. At the same time we pitch a marlin and the longest cane hangs another marlin, what to do? The reel is emptied very quickly on the cane, we take the decision to abandon the pitch, and we catch a 500 lbs after a very good fight.
4th day of fishing in São Pedro Bank, we catch marlins 2 for 4 seen, the two caught by pitch (350 lbs and 300 lbs), we see wild birds and the water is blue and calm sea.
Day 5: 1 Marlin (400 lbs) caught the pitch on 3 seen in São Pedro, beautiful sea time.
In the end, beautiful weather and lots of fish, the customer is happy. Pulsator Lures.
Dimeu went 1-1 today !!!!
Capt. Ronnie Fields, Gray Ingram, Kyle Francis & Nick Bovelland and the rest of Team Big Oh weighed a 1,254 lbs. Blue Marlin. The fish was caught on a pitch bait on an 80w with 100 lbs line. Meanwhile The Mistic Blue and Samir Rahal have caught a 900 lbs marlin. This will not break the current World Record of 1,190 lbs from the Azores on 80w, but it will go down as the 9th Largest Blue Marlin weighed in the Atlantic.
Unfortunately today 4 July and while there were a dozen boats participating in the World Cup, including our Pacemaker (with Guy Bouffard as customer) and our Bertram (with Jim Robertson as customer), no big marlin (minimum 500 lbs) has been fished.
For the past three weeks we have continued to have good fishing here in Cape Verde. On average during this time of year, numbers start to slow down and more bigger fish turn up. That has certainly been the case this year.
Three weeks ago we fished wseith Danie Louw and his two boys. We did a five day trip to Soa Nicola. The water and weather was beautiful and so was the fishing. The main bank was full of frigate mackerel jumping everywhere, and plenty marlin were feeding on them. On our first day there we released 3 blue marlin, a great way to start the trip. The remaining days continued to produce good numbers. There was so much bait we even tried living baiting, we did not catch any marlin using this method but lots of fun was had by all. After a good four days, the trip home was even productive, catching one nice marlin and seeing another four. The one fished we raised in Santa Lucia channel was a good one, however did not switch, but everyone got a good look at it.
We then had a few days break and started fishing with Jim and Jill Robertson. Jim is a long time friend of ours and a very experienced marlin fisherman. We had two days fishing pre before the 4 th July marlin World Cup. On both days we raised one small fish, but had no luck on getting them to the boat. Jim was running his big fish spread. Everyone was very excited for the 4th July as lots of big fish had been seen. Big Oh caught a 1247lb the day before a Mystic Blue a 900lb. So there big girls where around. However the 4th produced very slow fishing for all Cape Verde boats. Maybe even the slowest day of the season, just typical! But that's fishing for you.
After the 4th we did some staggered days fishing with Chris and Wendy from the Uk. They both managed to catch blue marlin. Wendy's was extra special as it was her first blue marlin. A great achievement and she did a excellent job on heavy tackle in the fighting chair. Not huge numbers of fishing but still good fun.
Overall it's a great season, and we would like to thank all your clients/friends for coming along to fish with us. It's not as electric as last year, but it's still great fishing. No two years are the same that's fishing, but we wait in anticipation. Hope to see you all soon in the near future, please see our special offer. Tight lines and stay safe.
Guy Bouffard is a regular customer, this year he came especially for the World Cup on 4 July.

Hello from Mindelo, Cape Verde. Over the past six days we have had some very good fishing. Fishing with Bob and Andy from England. The weather has also been very nice and calm. On the first day the fishing was on fire, in the deep water off San Pedro, with fish showing up in good numbers.
We started the day off by catching a double header off 250lb blue marlin. The luck continued and eventually we finished the day catching 6 from 8 bites. The biggest was a 500lb fish on the way home to top the day off. The second day we also fished the same area however not as many fish where being seen, we still had a lot of fun catching two nice blue marlin.
On the third day we decided to have a change of scene and headed over to Santo Antao in search of nice calm blue water. The first afternoon was a bit slow, but showed good signs with lots of bait, birds and blue water. The next morning we got up early and struck gold, catching a 500lb not long after putting the lines in. The fish came up on the long teasers and came all the way to the boat to eat a pitch bait. A very hot fun fish. We also caught two more great fish that day releasing a 400lb and 600lb. All the fish did some incredible jumping and lots of fun was had by all. A few beers were drank that night to celebrate the good day.
The over the next two final days we continued to have some good fishing in the calm water, releasing 1 from 3 bites. The last afternoon we fish San Pedro bank, where we saw two fish free swimming however did not manage to get a bite from them.
Great 6 days fishing with Bob and Andy, who both did great jobs fighting all the fish. We caught 12 fish over the 6 days. That's good fishing!
Albert and Jean-Claude, two connoisseurs of fishing.
The 19-05: in São Pedro, 2 contacts of marlin
The 20-05: 2 contacts of marlin
The 21-05: 1 contact of marlin
The 22-05: 1 contact, 1 marlin fished (300 lbs)
The 23-05: 2 contacts, 1 marlin fished (240 lbs)
Small disappointment for the customers, with few fishes: curiously this year in may we have the same temperatures as we had in March, I think that it is the explanation.
We go fishing with two English guests, Andy and his son Bob, aboard the Bertram with Stuart Simpson as skipper.
The 17-05: São Pedro, 8 contacts, 6 marlins caught and released (250 lbs to 500 lbs)
The 18-05: São Pedro, two contacts for two marlin caught.
The 19-05: In São Pedro, but nothing, Stuart decided to return to Mindelo to make diesel and go to Santo Antao where they caught nothing, bad day.
The 20-05: As soon as we launched the lines, we caught a first fish (500 lbs), then a 400 lbs and a 600 lbs.
The 21-05 3 contacts for one marlin caught, then in direction to São Pedro, two contacts.
The 22-05: São Pedro, 1 contact.
Satisfied customers who fished 12 marlins in 6 days with lots of emotions.

Over the past two weeks we have continued to have some good fishing. Since my last report we had Dominique and Michel fishing with us from France. On the first day we went 1-4, fishing in the North. One of the fish was a really nice one, which ate several times. Unfortunately did not mange to hook it well enough, however gave us a good show. However over the following days, they managed to get double headers on two consecutive days. Both times the first fish ate a long and the second fish followed a teaser, then pilling on a pitch. The weather was calm and Dominique managed to catch his first blue marlin on stand up. Doing a great job and hopefully continues to catch many more on stand up. Michel also managed to catch a real nice fish of 550lb, well done to him too. Had a great 6 days fishing with them, with lots of nice marlin.
Over the last week we had good friends Stuart, Gina, Dale and Johnny fishing with us all the way from Kenya. The trip started a bit slow, however things heated on the second day, where we raised 8 marlin and got bites out of 5, and ended up catching 2. That's fishing I guess. One of the two was a really nice fish caught by Johnny, we called it 550lb but could have easily been bigger. Johnny being a very experienced angler did a great job. Gina was ready all week to pitch her 30-50lb outfit, unfortunately marlin were not liking her bait. Stuart and Dale both also caught nice marlin. Was a great fun week and the weather was amazing with blue skies and calm seas most days. Thanks to all of them for their support.
Anyway I will keep you posted over the next week, weather looks to be good, so fingers crossed we get some good fishing. Tight lines to you all.

Happy customers, for the first time Dominique caught two marlins in stand-up.
Over past 10 days we have continued to have some good fishing. To start we had a group of friends from South Africa: Rudy, Cor, Johnny and Santi - a great group. We fished in the calm water of Santo Antão.. The trip started slow, but we came back strong. Overall we caught 7 marlin over the four days. With some decent size fish, two around the 400lb mark and one of 550lb. Well done to Santi for catching her first marlin. The others, all experienced anglers, did an awesome job too.
For the last five days we have been part of the Penn Challenge with Dutch friends. 13 boats took part, with good numbers of marlins being caught each day. We had one noticeable fish caught by Peter, a big 750lb that ate the long rigger. The fish put up a great fight and Peter did a great job on the rod. Some of the anglers also opted to pitch themselves on numerous other fish, which was a lot of fun.
That's it for now, will keep you updated.

Over the past week with have had some good fishing. Numbers have not been very high, however the average size of fish has been very impressive. With the average size of fish coming in at 500/600lb. This has been the case of the entire fleet here in mindelo.
However on the 4th April we had an impressive catch with our clients David and Amigo from Czech Republic, weighing a 906pounder. Unfortunately the fish died during the fight. The fish stayed on the top to start, doing some great long runs, then sounded deep and unfortunately died down there. Shame the fish died, but nevertheless a great catch.
Fishing with clients from France, Sebastien and Bernard, we had a great start catching a 650lb on stand up tackle. The fish came to the teasers and eventually ate the bait. The fight took 2hours, it was a great fish on light tackle. Unfortunately we then headed to Sao Nicolau to find some calmer water, however we had less luck there. We are now back in Mindelo.
We have also caught some other small fish during the weeks. Hopefully this coming week will bring some more good action.
Second day with São Nicolau, any marlin blue, a double contact of Spearfish, one spearfish fished (40kgs) and released.
